Passengers at Kotoka Airport to Keep Shoes and Belts On Under New Screening System

Passengers travelling through Kotoka International Airport will no longer be required to remove their shoes and belts during routine security screening from August this year, following the introduction of advanced airport screening technology by the government.

John Dramani Mahama announced that new security screening equipment is being installed to improve aviation security while reducing inconvenience and delays for travellers.

According to the President, the upgraded systems form part of efforts to modernise Ghana’s aviation sector and position the country as a major travel and aviation hub in West Africa.

“We are receiving and installing new equipment that will spare travellers using our airports the inconvenience of having to remove their shoes and their belts,” President Mahama stated during the launch of Ghana’s new electronic visa system at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City.

The initiative is expected to improve passenger flow, shorten queues at security checkpoints, and enhance the overall travel experience at Ghana’s busiest airport.

Government says the move forms part of a broader digitalisation and infrastructure modernisation agenda, which also includes the rollout of the country’s new E-visa platform aimed at simplifying entry procedures for international visitors.

Stakeholders within the aviation and tourism sectors have welcomed the development, describing it as a significant step toward making Ghana’s airports more efficient and globally competitive.
