Government Working to Address Causes of Rising Transport Fares – Sampson Ahi

Sampson Ahi has assured Ghanaians that government remains focused on tackling the key factors contributing to increasing transport fares, particularly fuel prices and operational costs faced by transport operators.

The Deputy Minister, who also serves on Parliament’s Transport Committee, made the remarks ahead of a planned 20 percent increase in transport fares by commercial transport operators scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, June 2.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Ahi expressed optimism that ongoing engagements between transport unions and the Ministry of Transport would lead to a favourable resolution.

“The government is focused on acquiring more vehicles to complement the efforts of the private sector,” he said.

He explained that transport fare adjustments are often influenced by several operational challenges, including fuel prices, spare parts, and vehicle maintenance costs.

“Another issue has to do with the cost of fuel, spare parts and other factors operators consider when determining transport fares,” he added.

The planned fare increment has generated public concern, especially amid rising living costs and growing pressure on household incomes.

Government officials are expected to continue negotiations with transport operators in an effort to ease the burden on commuters while addressing the concerns of transport service providers.
