Flooding Disrupts Academic Activities at Takoradi Technical Institute

Heavy rainfall in Takoradi has disrupted academic activities at the Opportunities Industrialisation Technical Institute, after floodwaters submerged parts of the campus and rendered classrooms inaccessible.

Examinations and other academic work were brought to a halt on Thursday, June 4, as students and staff were stranded at the school’s main gate and unable to access the compound.

The flooding reportedly affected several classrooms and damaged school property, including desks, books, and training equipment.

Students who spoke to the media expressed frustration over what they described as a recurring problem that continues to affect teaching and learning on campus.

“I have been here for two and a half years and we have been experiencing this type of flooding. Whenever it happens, our desks get destroyed as well as machines and books. It affects our academic performance,” one student said.

Another student explained that scheduled examinations had to be suspended because students could not enter the school premises.

“We cannot go inside, that is why we are all outside. We were supposed to write exams today but we cannot go in. It is disturbing. We urge authorities to help us. The school should be relocated,” the student lamented.

The incident has renewed concerns about poor drainage systems and infrastructure challenges affecting schools and communities in parts of the Western Region, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

Students and staff are appealing to government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to address the flooding situation, including relocating the school or reconstructing the facility on safer ground.
