Two Killed in Head-On Collision on Elubo–Takoradi Highway

Two people have lost their lives following a head-on collision involving a Sinotruck (Howo) tipper truck and a Nigerian passenger bus at Abease on the Elubo–Takoradi Highway.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the accident occurred after a distress call was received at 11:53 a.m. Firefighters from the Elubo Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene with a five-member rescue team led by Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO II) Clement Arthur.
The rescue team arrived within minutes and found five occupants of the passenger bus and one occupant of the tipper truck trapped in the wreckage. Three casualties had already been rescued by bystanders before firefighters arrived.
The GNFS successfully rescued the remaining victims and transported four injured persons to the Elubo Government Hospital for medical treatment.
However, the driver of the Nigerian passenger bus was pronounced dead at the scene, while the mate of the tipper truck later died at the hospital. Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash occurred after the bus driver allegedly swerved to avoid a pothole, veered into the opposite lane, and collided head-on with the oncoming Sinotruck.
Following the rescue operation, firefighters disconnected the batteries of the damaged vehicles to prevent a possible fire outbreak, cooled the truck’s overheated engine compartment, and cleared debris from the highway to restore the smooth flow of traffic.
The Ghana National Fire Service has once again urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads and called for greater attention to road maintenance to help reduce accidents caused by poor road conditions.
