Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have completed a search and rescue operation following the collapse of a two-storey apartment building near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket at Adenta New Site during a heavy downpour on Wednesday evening.
According to the GNFS, a distress call was received at approximately 6:36 pm, prompting the immediate deployment of rescue teams from the National Headquarters, with support from officers from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations.
Five occupants, made up of three adults and two children, were trapped beneath the rubble after the structure collapsed.
The victims were identified as Margaret Kpeli, believed to be in her late 30s; Fred Atagba, believed to be in his late 30s; Solomon; Seyeram Dzigda, a child; and David Dzigda, also a child.
Following a coordinated rescue operation, four victims — Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda and David Dzigda — were rescued alive with injuries and transported to the 37 Military Hospital for medical treatment.
A dog trapped beneath the debris was also successfully rescued alive during the operation.
The GNFS said intensive rescue efforts later led to the retrieval of Margaret Kpeli from beneath the rubble in an unconscious state. She was subsequently handed over to the Adenta District Police for preservation and further investigation.
The search and rescue operation officially ended at 10:54 pm on Thursday.
The Ghana National Fire Service commended community members for their swift response and support during the initial stages of the rescue effort.
The Service also expressed appreciation to personnel from the National Headquarters, Legon Fire Station, Abelemkpe Fire Station, the Ghana Police Service, medical teams and all supporting agencies whose collaboration contributed to the successful operation.
