GIBA Condemns Assault on JoyNews Reporter by Military Officers, Demands Accountability

The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent assault on JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony and his cameraman by individuals identified as military officers, believed to be from the Ghana Armed Forces, during a demolition exercise at a warehouse linked to businessman Daniel McKorley (McDan) on Spintex Road, Accra, on July 31, 2025.

The journalists faced intimidation, physical assault, and unlawful detention while covering the event, actions GIBA described as a “grave threat” to press freedom, the right to information, and Ghana’s democratic principles.

In a press release, GIBA demanded a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation, insisting that those responsible be held accountable without protection.

The association expressed gratitude to the Presidency for condemning the incident and directing the Ghana Armed Forces to investigate, hoping it will curb the rising trend of attacks on journalists by security agents.

GIBA called on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to retrain personnel on the professional treatment of media practitioners, emphasizing that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy.

Standing in solidarity with the affected journalists and JoyNews, GIBA reiterated its commitment to defending the rights and safety of media personnel across Ghana, urging an end to harassment, violence, and censorship that undermine the media’s role in promoting accountability and transparency.
