Greater Accra Leads Gun Amnesty as Firearms Surrender Increases Nationwide

The Greater Accra Region has recorded the highest number of firearms surrendered under Ghana’s ongoing Gun Amnesty Programme, according to the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA).
The programme, which began on December 1, allows individuals to voluntarily surrender or register unlicensed and illegal firearms without fear of arrest, prosecution, or questioning. It is scheduled to end on January 15, 2026.
Speaking to the media on Friday, December 26, after a visit to the National Mosque in Accra, NACSA’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Adam Bonaa, said Greater Accra is currently leading in the number of weapons handed in, with strong support from regional security commanders.
“The Greater Accra Region is one of the areas where most of the weapons we have collected are coming from. It is currently leading in terms of arms surrendered under the amnesty programme,” Dr. Bonaa stated.
He explained that the visit to the National Mosque was part of efforts to engage religious leaders and leverage their influence to promote peace and encourage participation in the amnesty. Dr. Bonaa praised the National Chief Imam for his long-standing commitment to peace and revealed that the Islamic leader has agreed to serve as an ambassador for the initiative.
“The Chief Imam is one of the pillars of peace in this country. Even in difficult moments, he has consistently called for restraint,” he noted.
Dr. Bonaa added that the Chief Imam has pledged to encourage members of the Muslim community to voluntarily surrender any illegal firearms in their possession.
Also present, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, assured the public that individuals who turn in weapons under the amnesty will not be arrested. He urged the public to take advantage of the opportunity before the programme ends.
Authorities say the Gun Amnesty Programme forms part of broader efforts to reduce the proliferation of small arms and enhance public safety across the country.
