Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Fomena MP, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has called for an end to partisan recruitment into Ghana’s National Security and other security agencies.
Mr Asiamah argued that recruitment into the country’s security institutions must be based on merit, competence and qualifications, rather than political affiliation.
According to him, using party loyalty as a basis for appointing personnel to security agencies could undermine good governance and weaken the country’s security architecture.
Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the 9th REPAM-CDS Security Governance Conference on Thursday, September 3, he stressed that political affiliation should not determine who is recruited into Ghana’s security institutions.
He urged authorities to focus on individuals who possess the requisite skills, experience and competence to perform the duties required of them.
“We are advocating that every Ghanaian is a Ghanaian. Let’s look for people who have what it takes to do the work, and I think that is what can actually help Ghana to move on. It’s not about partisanship,” he said.
Mr Asiamah maintained that a professional and competent security service was essential to protecting Ghana’s peace, stability and national interests.
He therefore called on successive governments to prioritise professionalism and competence in the recruitment and appointment of personnel within the country’s security institutions.
