Passport Director laments persistent misconceptions despite major reforms in Ghana passport system

The Director of Passports, , has expressed concern that many Ghanaians still hold outdated beliefs about passport acquisition, even though significant reforms have simplified the process.
He said some citizens still assume that middlemen are necessary to obtain a passport, a practice he warned continues to undermine efforts to modernise and improve service delivery.
He explained that in the past, passport acquisition in Ghana was widely stressful, with long queues, overcrowded offices, delays, and the involvement of unauthorized agents who exploited applicants. Many people were forced to arrive before dawn just to secure limited appointment slots.
However, he noted that recent reforms have greatly improved the system, including digitised applications, online appointment booking, reduced processing times, and courier delivery services.
Speaking in an interview with Metro News, he said although the system has been modernised, some members of the public have not fully embraced the changes.
He also revealed plans for a new, more user-friendly online portal designed to further simplify passport and citizenship applications for Ghanaians.
Officials at the Passport Office maintain that these reforms aim to make the process faster, more transparent, and more accessible to all citizens.
