Western Region: Couple Injured in Bullion Van Crash, Driver Flees Scene

A couple sustained critical injuries on October 15, 2025, when a speeding bullion van collided with their Volkswagen Golf on the Effia Nkwanta Hospital-Takoradi Road around 3:00 p.m., with the errant driver absconding without stopping.

The victims, whose identities remain undisclosed, were heading toward Takoradi in their vehicle (registration WR-3230-11) when the bullion van rammed into the rear, causing the Golf to skid off the road and somersault. Eyewitnesses described the van as overtaking recklessly from the exit lane, with a second bullion van trailing but failing to stop or assist. “The driver who hit the car didn’t even stop to check on them. The second one also drove past. That is heartless,” one witness told Connect 97.1 FM.

The husband suffered a deep cut on his forehead and facial injuries, while the wife sustained hand and finger wounds. Bystanders quickly pulled them from the wreckage and rushed them to Effia Nkwanta Hospital for treatment, where they are stable but under observation.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation, urging eyewitnesses to come forward. The bullion van’s registration and security firm remain unidentified, with police vowing swift arrest for the driver accused of dangerous driving.

The accident has sparked outrage on social media, with X users like @RoadSafetyGH calling for stricter enforcement against commercial vehicles: “Bullion vans think roads are theirs—time for accountability!” This incident echoes a 2024 bullion van crash in Kumasi that injured four, highlighting persistent issues with speeding armored vehicles in urban areas.
