Four Illegal Miners Feared Dead After Galamsey Pit Collapse at Amansie Central

Four suspected illegal miners have died after a galamsey pit collapsed at Skuumu near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, throwing the community into shock as rescue efforts were mounted to retrieve the victims.

Preliminary reports suggest that the mining site was originally allocated to Volta Resources, which allegedly handed over parts of the concession to illegal miners. The area was later assigned to Logist Group Company Limited to carry out reclamation works on the degraded land.

Despite ongoing efforts to restore the site, the victims reportedly entered the abandoned pit to engage in illegal mining activities when it suddenly caved in, trapping them underground.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies were deployed to the scene to assist with rescue operations.

An excavator was later brought in to help retrieve the bodies from the collapsed pit later in the evening.

Sources identified the leader of the group as Solomon Amadevor, while the identities of the other three deceased persons have yet to be officially released as investigations continue.

The tragic incident adds to growing concerns over illegal mining in Ghana, with experts warning about the increasing loss of lives and environmental destruction associated with unsafe galamsey operations.
