University of Ghana Students Hit with Over 25% Fee Hike for 2025/2026 Academic Year

Students at the University of Ghana are upset and worried after discovering a big jump in school fees for the 2025/2026 academic year, with increases going above 25% in all colleges.

The new provisional fee schedule shows sharp rises for both fresh and continuing students, but university management has not yet given an official explanation for the changes.

At the College of Humanities:

  • Fresh Level 100 students will now pay GH¢3,110, up 34% from GH¢2,319 last year.
  • Continuing students will pay GH¢2,253, a 27% increase from GH¢1,777.

Law students face similar hikes:

  • Fresh undergraduate law students will pay GH¢3,226, up 33% from GH¢2,435.
  • Continuing law students will pay GH¢2,396 instead of GH¢1,890.

Other colleges, including Health Sciences, Basic and Applied Sciences, and Education, are seeing increases between 25% and 35%.

A major part of the rise comes from third-party fees, which jumped sharply:

  • Last year: GH¢255 for all students.
  • New year: GH¢767 for fresh students and GH¢455 for continuing students.

These extra charges include:

  • GH¢300 SRC Hostel Development Levy
  • GH¢100 for the university’s 75th Anniversary Legacy Project
  • GH¢50 SRC welfare dues
  • GH¢5 reprographic fees
  • Fresh and diploma students must pay GH¢312 for a Telecel data package
  • Continuing students can choose a monthly Telecel data and airtime package for GH¢10.22

Many students and parents are angry, saying the increases came without warning and will add heavy financial pressure on families already struggling with living costs.

Students are demanding that university authorities explain the reasons clearly and reconsider the hikes to make education more affordable.
