UGMC Responds to Michael Blackson’s Social Media Feedback Regarding Mother’s Death

Management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd. (UGMC) has issued a press release responding to comments shared on social media on August 4, 2026, by actor and comedian Mr. Michael Blackson regarding the care and passing of his late mother.

Condolences and Review of Concerns

The management and staff of UGMC extended their deepest condolences to Mr. Blackson and his family, recognizing the loss as an extremely difficult time. UGMC stated that it values every patient and family experience, treating all feedback—both positive and critical—as crucial for improving the quality of care. Following the social media posts, the facility reviewed the raised concerns thoroughly, fairly, and objectively in alignment with established clinical and administrative processes.

Disputed Claims and Patient Confidentiality

UGMC stated unequivocally that the facts presented by Mr. Blackson online contained numerous inaccuracies and did not accurately reflect the events surrounding the medical care provided to his 83-year-old mother. The patient had been referred to UGMC from a peripheral hospital and remained at the center from May 27 to July 16, 2026—a period of approximately eight weeks—until her passing.

However, the medical center emphasized that, consistent with institutional ethical standards, core values, and the legal duty to protect personal information even after death, it will not disclose or discuss details of any patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records, or account of care in the public domain out of respect for the dignity of the deceased and her family.

Clinical and Financial Operations

Addressing general practices at the facility, UGMC noted that all clinical decisions are made exclusively by qualified healthcare professionals based on sound medical judgment, established care standards, and patient best interests, with consultation and consent from authorized family representatives where necessary.

Additionally, the hospital affirmed that its billing and financial processes are transparent, governed strictly by institutional policies, and operated independently of clinical decision-making.
