Asutifi North MP Calls for Crackdown on Illegal NHIS Charges at Health Facilities

The Member of Parliament for the Asutifi North Constituency in the Ahafo Region, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has called for decisive action against healthcare providers who impose illegal charges on patients under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) scheme.

Speaking at an NHIA stakeholders’ meeting in Kenyasi, organised to address the issue of unauthorized fees at health facilities, the MP stressed the need to protect the integrity of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

According to him, the nationwide portability of the NHIS, which allows members to access healthcare services anywhere in the country regardless of where they registered, makes it even more important to eliminate illegal charges that discourage people from using the scheme.

Hon. Addo said firm sanctions against service providers who engage in unauthorized billing would restore public confidence in the NHIS and encourage more Ghanaians to enrol and remain active members of the scheme.

The lawmaker also noted that Members of Parliament receive allocations from the NHIS Levy to support healthcare development projects in their constituencies.

He highlighted several healthcare initiatives undertaken in the Asutifi North Constituency through the NHIS Levy, describing the fund as a vital resource for improving access to quality healthcare and strengthening health infrastructure in the area.
