Violence broke out during a New Patriotic Party (NPP) polling station election at the Tepa Akwasiase Zongo electoral area in the Ahafo Ano North Constituency, leaving two people injured after they were reportedly stabbed.
Chaos erupts during voting process
According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated during the election amid accusations of manipulation, intimidation, and breaches of electoral procedures.
The confrontation reportedly turned violent, with machetes allegedly used during clashes between supporters. Warning shots were also said to have been fired in an attempt to disperse angry party members and restore order.
MP accused of influencing process
Some aggrieved supporters accused the area Member of Parliament, Nana Agyemang Prempeh, of interfering in the electoral process.
They alleged that the electoral album had been manipulated to favour individuals believed to support the MP, while others were prevented from participating in the voting exercise.
Calls for suspension of elections
Speaking to the media after the incident, dissatisfied party members appealed to the national, regional, and constituency leadership of the New Patriotic Party to intervene immediately.
The group called for the suspension of the election until concerns over transparency, fairness, and credibility are properly addressed.
Allegations of electoral irregularities
The disgruntled members further claimed that electoral guidelines were ignored during the exercise. According to them, the official voter album was not properly used.
They also alleged that nursing training students and students from Tepa Senior High School were allowed to vote without proper verification.
Additionally, some supporters accused organizers of permitting individuals believed to be sympathizers of the opposition National Democratic Congress to participate in the election.
Security tightened as tensions remain high
Following the disturbances, security presence in parts of Tepa was increased as tensions among party supporters remained high.
The aggrieved members warned that unresolved disputes and alleged intimidation tactics could damage the party’s image and weaken grassroots confidence in the constituency ahead of future political activities.
