The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GRTCC) have welcomed the government’s recent reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel and announced that transport fares will remain unchanged.
In a joint press release, the two bodies thanked the Government of Ghana, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, for the reduction of GH¢2.00 per litre on diesel, which took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, for a period of one month.
The leadership said prior to the intervention, they had engaged the sector Minister, presenting the case for drivers and calling for urgent relief. They expressed happiness that the engagements yielded results and urged government to extend the current window beyond one month should oil prices continue to rise.
Following consultations with their national executives and stakeholders, the unions informed the general public that transport fares will remain unchanged across all routes until further notice.
They called on all drivers, station masters and branch executives to strictly observe the approved fare structure. No additional charges outside the official fare table will be permitted.
Any commuter required to pay above the approved fare has been advised to report the matter immediately to the nearest union office for prompt redress.
