Suspect Arrested in Connection with Murder of UCC Student Innocentia Avinu

A 39-year-old man has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the murder of Level 200 University of Cape Coast (UCC) student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose body was found at Hutchland Beach.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was apprehended on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team at the Pedu Lorry Station.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the university’s hostel enclave. He then allegedly transported her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.

The arrest comes days after the student’s body was discovered at the beach under circumstances police are still investigating.

One of the deceased’s roommates told police that Innocentia had called to inform her that she was going out to meet an acquaintance. She reportedly left her room dressed in casual clothing but failed to return, prompting concern among friends and relatives.

Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder are ongoing, and the suspect is assisting with inquiries while in custody.

The University of Cape Coast and the bereaved family have been informed of the development. Further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
