Young Man Dies After Alleged Assault by Security Guards at Chinese-Owned Galamsey Site in Tigarikrom

A young man in his early 20s has died following an alleged assault by security personnel at a Chinese-owned illegal mining (galamsey) site in Tigarikrom, a suburb of Samreboi in the Amenfi West Municipality.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victim went to the mining site along China Road on the night of Wednesday, April 8, to steal a liquid substance believed to be diesel. He was allegedly apprehended by security guards, beaten multiple times, and restrained.

Evans Addie, Assembly Member for the Tigarikrom Electoral Area, confirmed the incident, stating that the young man sustained serious injuries during the assault. Sources say he was released the following morning after intervention by local elders but was pronounced dead shortly after being taken home.

The incident sparked outrage in Tigarikrom and adjoining Zongo communities. Some youth reportedly stormed the mining site, setting two excavators on fire and seizing another. Police were later deployed to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

The bereaved family has indicated that burial arrangements will proceed immediately in line with Islamic customs.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but investigations are expected to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.

This tragic event has reignited concerns over lawlessness, human rights abuses, and escalating tensions linked to illegal mining activities in the country.
