Tragic Accident at Kormantse Claims 10 Lives, Injures Five in Central Region

A devastating road accident at Kormantse on the Cape Coast–Accra Highway in Ghana’s Central Region has claimed the lives of 10 people and left five others injured, including a child and a truck driver, on September 6, 2025.
The collision, which occurred at 3:50 a.m., involved a Mercedes Benz (AS 4146-25) traveling toward Cape Coast and a Hino truck (GW 5958-25) heading to Accra, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
A statement from the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, signed by DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, detailed the response: “At 0350 hours today, the Mankessim Fire Rescue Team was dispatched to a road crash at Kormantse. Most occupants managed to self-rescue with assistance from passersby before the arrival of the rescue team. Firefighters extricated two trapped persons who were suspected dead.” The injured were rushed to Saltpond Government Hospital for treatment, while eight fatalities were confirmed by police at the scene.
With assistance from other stakeholders, the road has been cleared and reopened to traffic. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Ghana Police Service, with no further details released yet.
This tragedy adds to growing concerns about road safety in Ghana, where the National Road Safety Authority reported a 21.6% increase in road deaths in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024.
