Armed Sea Attack at Senya Breku: Fishermen Robbed of Outboard Motors and Generators, Left Stranded in Waters

Several fishermen operating in the Senya Breku area were attacked at sea in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, 2026, by armed hijackers who allegedly opened fire, robbed them of valuable equipment, and left them stranded in the water.

The victims, who had gone fishing overnight and were returning to shore at dawn, were reportedly targeted while operating seven canoes. The assailants, traveling in a black boat, reportedly fired shots to intimidate the fishermen before seizing their outboard motors and generator sets.

Speaking to the media, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Hon. Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, confirmed the incident and provided details on the scale of the attack.

“There was an armed attack at sea. Our fishermen usually go out at night and return early in the morning. Those who went toward the Nyanyano side were reportedly attacked. They were robbed of their outboard motors and generator sets by a black boat,” she stated.

The MP declined to speculate on the nationality of the attackers, noting that investigations are still underway.

“I cannot disclose the nationality of the attackers. Investigations are ongoing,” she added.

Hon. Tetteh-Agbotui confirmed that security agencies have swiftly responded to the incident. She stated that the Ghana Navy and marine police unit dispatched by the Inspector-General of Police are actively involved in operations to track down the perpetrators and recover the stolen items.

“The military, the IGP has also dispatched a military marine police unit to help. So the navy is helping, and the marine police are also helping us,” she explained.

The attack has heightened fear among fishing communities along the Central Region coast, where sea robbery incidents have become increasingly frequent in recent years. Fishermen often report being targeted while returning with catches, losing engines, generators, nets, and other expensive equipment critical to their livelihoods.

Local leaders and the Fisheries Commission have repeatedly called for enhanced maritime security patrols, better surveillance along key fishing corridors, and stronger regional cooperation to combat transboundary sea piracy and robbery.

No casualties were reported in the latest incident, but the fishermen were left helpless at sea after their boats were disabled. Authorities are continuing to search for the suspects and have appealed to anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or marine police unit.

The Ghana Police Service and Ghana Navy are expected to issue further updates as operations progress. The incident underscores the urgent need for sustained investment in coastal security to protect one of Ghana’s most important livelihoods — artisanal fishing.
