The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally notified the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, of the appointment of the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, as the new Majority Leader.
In a letter dated Monday, August 24, 2026, and signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party said the appointment followed consultations between the NDC leadership and the Presidency.
The letter stated that Mr Agalga’s appointment takes immediate effect.
“I write on behalf of the Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to formally inform you that, following consultations between the Leadership of the Party and the Presidency, Hon. James Agalga, Member of Parliament for Builsa North Constituency, has been appointed as the new Majority Leader of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana,” Mr Kwetey wrote.
According to the NDC General Secretary, the appointment is intended to provide leadership and coordination for the NDC Majority Caucus as it carries out its constitutional and parliamentary responsibilities.
Mr Kwetey expressed confidence that Mr Agalga, with the cooperation of the Speaker and other Members of Parliament, would provide the leadership needed to advance the work of Parliament in the interest of the country.
The formal notification comes after Speaker Alban Bagbin clarified that President John Dramani Mahama’s earlier announcement of Mr Agalga as Majority Leader did not follow the required parliamentary procedure.
The Speaker explained that the President could not formally communicate a change in the leadership of a parliamentary caucus to the Speaker.
He said Parliament’s Standing Orders require changes in the leadership of the Majority or Minority Caucus to be formally communicated to the Speaker by the General Secretary of the relevant political party.
Speaking when Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, Mr Bagbin stressed that the prescribed procedure had to be followed before Mr Agalga could receive the recognition and courtesies associated with the position.
He further noted that the Standing Orders define the Majority Leader as a Member of Parliament “designated by the Majority Caucus as its leader in the House.”
Mr Agalga’s appointment follows the decision to replace Mahama Ayariga, who is expected to assume a new role in government as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
