NPP Announces Planned Demonstration Over Alleged Political Intimidation

The New Patriotic Party says it is preparing to stage a major nationwide demonstration in protest against what it describes as increasing political harassment and intimidation of opposition members by state security agencies.
Decision follows Abronye DC’s re-arrest
The announcement comes after the re-arrest and remand of Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC.
The outspoken politician was remanded for two weeks as investigations continue into allegations of misinformation and offensive public statements. He had previously been granted bail in connection with the same case.
“We can never be intimidated” – Henry Nana Boakye
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, said the NPP views the recent developments as part of a broader pattern aimed at suppressing opposition voices.
“We are going to rise; trust me, in the coming days, we are going to stage a mammoth demonstration. We are going to have a series of activities. We can never be intimidated,” he stated.
NPP alleges suppression of free speech
Boakye accused the government of using state institutions to target critics and criminalise free expression.
According to him, the party is concerned about what it describes as a growing culture of political intimidation against opposition members and supporters.
He also referenced the case of David Essendoh, who he claimed was arrested after posting an image of the President alongside the phrase “Dumsor is back” on social media.
Boakye alleged that Essendoh was moved between security facilities without his family initially knowing his whereabouts.
Calls for protection of democratic freedoms
The NPP National Organiser argued that such incidents pose a threat to democratic freedoms in Ghana.
He questioned why authorities were focusing on critics of the government while other national challenges remained unresolved.
The party says further details about the planned demonstration and related activities will be announced in the coming days.
