NACOC Arrests 72 Suspects in Festive Anti-Drug Operations Across Eastern and Greater Accra Regions

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested 72 suspects in a series of intelligence-led operations aimed at combating illicit drug trafficking and abuse during the festive season.

The coordinated exercise, dubbed Operation White Ember, was carried out across parts of the Eastern and Greater Accra regions as part of efforts to disrupt drug-related activities during the holidays.

According to NACOC, the operations targeted known drug hotspots, including Mamfe and Tutu in the Eastern Region, as well as Madina Redco Flats, Zongo Junction, and railway slum communities around Airport City in Accra.

On Boxing Day, the enforcement team extended the raids to Tema Community One and Teshie Nungua, where several additional suspects were arrested. The operations were supported by NACOC’s K9 Unit, which played a key role in detecting and seizing illicit substances.

Beyond targeted raids, officers also conducted patrols at major shopping malls and along popular beaches in Accra to prevent drug-related activities during the festive period.

Exhibits retrieved during the exercise included ecstasy, methamphetamine, and alcoholic beverages suspected to be laced with cannabis.

NACOC noted that the operation had a significant social impact, stressing that the seized drugs could have led to widespread addiction if they had reached the streets.

Residents in affected communities reportedly welcomed the crackdown, with some applauding officers as suspected drug dealers were arrested and removed from their neighbourhoods.

In addition to enforcement, NACOC officers carried out public education at various locations, sensitising residents on the dangers of drug abuse and its impact on public health and safety.

The Commission has assured the public that Operation White Ember will continue in the weeks and months ahead as part of sustained efforts to promote a safer and healthier society.
