President Mahama Calls for Unity, Urges Against Political Point-Scoring Amid Helicopter Crash Tragedy

President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to political actors and the public to refrain from exploiting the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two ministers, for political advantage.

In a heartfelt address to the nation from the Jubilee House on Thursday, Mahama emphasized unity and compassion as Ghana mourns the loss of key figures.

The crash, which occurred on August 6, 2025, in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, killed Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Aboagye, and crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The incident has plunged the nation into a three-day mourning period, effective from August 7 to August 9, 2025.

“In this moment of national grief, let us remember that we are, above all, Ghanaians—united not just by nationality but by shared hope, shared humanity, and now, shared sorrow,” Mahama said.

He urged citizens to avoid division, speculation, or political point-scoring, calling instead for strength, empathy, and support for the bereaved families. “To the families, to the Ghana Armed Forces, to the Ministries and Departments that have lost dedicated staff, and to the National Democratic Congress, which mourns the passing of valued members, may you find strength in their memory and their legacy,” he added.

As investigations into the crash continue, Mahama’s plea for solidarity aims to foster a collective healing process amid the national tragedy.
