Multiple Feared Dead in Horrific Crash at Kwashieman Traffic Light – Bus and Onion-Laden Truck Collide

A tragic road crash at Kwashieman in Accra has left several people feared dead following a violent collision between a passenger bus and a truck loaded with onions early this morning.
The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Good Friday, April 3, when a Grand Bird bus travelling from Takoradi towards Sowutuom attempted to make a turn at the Kwashieman traffic light.
At the same time, the truck was approaching the intersection from the Lapaz direction, heading towards the Kasoa stretch. According to eyewitnesses, the truck was moving on an amber light when the bus driver proceeded with the turn.
Despite repeated honking by the truck driver to alert the bus to clear the intersection, the two vehicles collided with a powerful impact.
The force of the crash pushed the truck off its path, causing it to veer directly into a group of pedestrians who had gathered at the traffic light, waiting to cross the road.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, with the extent of damage and injuries creating panic among bystanders. The bus was reportedly carrying passengers attending a convention.
Police have confirmed the severity of the crash but say it has been difficult to immediately determine the exact number of casualties due to the chaotic situation. Emergency services, including the Ghana National Fire Service and ambulance teams, are on the scene providing assistance.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are currently underway, with focus expected on traffic light adherence, speed, and visibility conditions at the time.
This latest fatal crash on a major Accra route has once again highlighted concerns about road safety, driver behaviour at intersections, and the vulnerability of pedestrians at busy traffic points.
Further updates on the number of casualties and the identities of those involved will be provided as police and health authorities release official information.
Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragic incident.
