DVLA Urges Pre-2023 Vehicle Owners to Update Records Digitally Ahead of New Plates Rollout

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has directed owners of all vehicles registered before 2023 to visit any DVLA office nationwide to migrate their manual records to the digital platform, a prerequisite for acquiring new license plates planned for 2026.
DVLA Corporate Affairs Director Stephen Attuh told Graphic Online’s Timothy Ngnenbe that pre-2023 registrations were processed manually, necessitating digital onboarding for seamless transition to the upcoming system.
“Customers whose vehicles fall under this category need to visit any of our offices across the country to ensure their manual registration files are migrated to the digital platform before we finally roll out the new licence plate system,” Attuh said.
He warned that non-compliant vehicles will be ineligible for the new plates once parliamentary approvals are secured.
The new plates will incorporate Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for enhanced traceability.
DVLA CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey announced on December 24, 2025, a suspension of the initial January rollout pending amendment to the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (L.I. 2180).
Vehicle owners are encouraged to act promptly to avoid delays when the policy resumes.
