MTN Ghana has committed more than $1.1 billion over the next three years to expand and improve its telecommunications network, including the rollout of 5G services across the country.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, September 7.
According to the Minister, the investment is expected to address persistent network challenges, improve connectivity and extend reliable telecommunications services to underserved communities.
$380m Investment Planned for 2026
Mr George said approximately $380 million of the total investment has been earmarked for the current year.
The funds will be used to improve network coverage, deploy additional cell sites and support the expansion of 5G infrastructure.
He said the scale of the investment demonstrates MTN Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its network infrastructure and responding to the growing demand for reliable and high-speed connectivity.
800 New Cell Sites Planned
The Minister disclosed that MTN Ghana is undertaking a major expansion involving 800 new cell sites, describing it as the company’s highest annual build in a decade.
He said particular attention is being given to rural and peri-urban communities where network challenges have been most pronounced.
“MTN Ghana has committed more than $1.1 billion over the next three years, including roughly $380 million this year to expand coverage, deploy new sites and support 5G rollout.”
Mr George added that he personally worked with Members of Parliament to identify specific locations experiencing the most severe network challenges within their constituencies.
According to him, this was the first time such an exercise had been undertaken on that scale.
180 New Sites Already Active
The Minister said 180 of the identified sites are already active and carrying traffic, as MTN Ghana continues with the wider network expansion programme.
The investment and additional infrastructure are expected to strengthen network coverage and improve access to telecommunications services, particularly in underserved communities across the country.
