Ministry of the Interior Clears 2025 Rent Allowance Arrears for Prisons, Fire Service and Immigration Personnel

The Ministry of the Interior has announced the release of funds to fully settle outstanding rent allowance arrears owed to personnel of the Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Immigration Service for the year 2025.
In a statement issued by its Public Affairs and Communications Unit on Monday, March 2, the Ministry confirmed that the payment covers all eligible officers across the three services who were affected by the delay.
The Ministry expressed sincere appreciation to the personnel for their patience and understanding during the period it took to resolve the arrears. It acknowledged the concerns raised by officers and their families and assured them that concrete steps have now been taken to prevent any recurrence.
A key reform highlighted in the statement is the mechanisation of the rent allowance payment system. Beginning March 2026, rent allowances will be processed and paid automatically together with officers’ monthly salaries. The new arrangement is designed to eliminate administrative bottlenecks, reduce delays, and ensure greater efficiency and predictability in the disbursement of entitlements.
“This integration forms part of broader efforts to strengthen financial management and enhance the welfare conditions of personnel within the security services under the Ministry’s supervision,” the statement read.
The Ministry reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of officers serving in the Prisons Service, Fire Service, and Immigration Service. It pledged to continue close collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and other relevant stakeholders to guarantee the timely payment of all allowances and entitlements moving forward.
The announcement has been welcomed by personnel and their families, many of whom had expressed frustration over the delayed payments throughout 2025. The mechanised payroll integration is seen as a positive step toward greater accountability and reliability in the welfare support system for Ghana’s security services.
No specific amount disbursed was disclosed in the statement, but officials indicated that all verified arrears have now been cleared. Affected officers are expected to see the payments reflected in their accounts in the coming days.
