Sierra Leone President Bio Mourns Ghana’s Loss in Helicopter Crash, Signs Condolence Book

Sierra Leone’s President and ECOWAS Chairman Julius Maada Bio extended heartfelt condolences to Ghana following the tragic military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
In a poignant statement shared on his official social media, President Bio described the incident as a “profound national tragedy” and expressed solidarity with the Ghanaian people. “My heartfelt condolences go out to His Excellency President Mahama and the people of Ghana during this incredibly difficult time. Please know that the people of Sierra Leone stand in solidarity with you as you mourn this profound loss,” he wrote.
On August 8, 2025, President Bio traveled to Ghana to personally offer his sympathies to President John Dramani Mahama and the nation. During the visit, he laid a wreath in honor of the victims and signed a book of condolence, paying his respects to those lost in the crash. The Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter, en route from Accra to Obuasi, crashed in the Adansi-Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all aboard, including key government officials and crew members.
The gesture underscores the deep ties between Sierra Leone and Ghana, with President Bio’s actions reflecting ECOWAS’s commitment to regional unity in times of grief.
