Mahama Declares: ‘A Woman Will Be President of Ghana Soon’

President John Dramani Mahama expressed unwavering confidence on October 13, 2025, that Ghana will soon elect its first female president, highlighting the nation’s strides in gender equality during a speech at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing.
As the African Union Champion for Gender and Women’s Empowerment, Mahama praised Ghana’s deliberate integration of gender perspectives into national policies, stating, “I am proud to say that Ghana remains steadfast in its pursuit of equality for all.” He pointed to landmark achievements, including the election of the country’s first female Vice President and women’s appointments across government, judiciary, security, and key institutions, describing them as “not symbolic gestures” but affirmations of women’s rightful place in decision-making.
Mahama forecasted, “I am confident that, in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and that a woman will be president of the Republic of Ghana.” He credited progress in education, where Ghana has achieved gender parity in enrollment, with more girls accessing and completing school than ever before.
The President detailed institutional reforms, including strengthened Ministries of Gender, Children, and Social Protection; the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU); the Domestic Violence Secretariat; and specialized courts, backed by sustained budgets to protect women and girls. Mahama called for global leaders and partners to take transformative action for genuine gender equality, emphasizing Ghana’s role as a beacon in Africa.
