The Ghana Police Service has announced significant breakthroughs in its ongoing nationwide crackdown on robbery and murder, with several suspects arrested and firearms and ammunition recovered.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno disclosed this at a press briefing in Accra, where he said the Service had intensified intelligence-led operations across the Western, Northern, Greater Accra and other regions during the first quarter of the year.
According to the IGP, specialised intelligence teams were deployed to monitor criminal activities and conduct targeted operations aimed at dismantling organised criminal networks.
Suspect Arrested Over Murder of Missing Couple
Giving an update on seven major cases, IGP Yohuno disclosed the arrest of 32-year-old Abraham Awundok in connection with the alleged murder of Dr. Jesse Amwa and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amwasi.
The couple were reported missing in April 2026, and subsequent investigations led police to recover their bodies.
Awundok, who allegedly worked as an errand boy for the couple, is accused of killing them before allegedly taking their mobile phones, money and vehicle and fleeing to the United Arab Emirates.
The suspect was declared wanted through an Interpol Red Notice on August 30, 2026, and was subsequently deported from Dubai to Ghana.
The IGP said Awundok admitted to the alleged crime during police interrogation. Investigations into the case are continuing.
Planned Bank Robberies Foiled
The Police Service also reported that it had successfully foiled planned robbery attacks targeting banks in Accra and Tema.
Two suspects were shot dead during the operations, while another suspect was arrested at Labone.
Police also dismantled suspected robbery gangs operating in areas including Abofokrom and Manso.
Five suspects were arrested in those operations, leading to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles and 357 rounds of ammunition.
More Robbery Suspects Arrested
According to the IGP, additional suspects have been arrested in connection with robbery incidents in Bufei, Tamale and Yendi, as well as the Kultor Market robbery and murder case.
Another suspect was arrested in connection with a robbery on the Enyiresi Central Road, where police recovered a pump-action gun.
In a separate operation, five more suspects were arrested with eight AK-47 assault rifles.
Police Vow to Intensify Intelligence-Led Operations
IGP Yohuno assured the public that investigations into all the cases remain ongoing.
He said the suspects are currently in police custody and will be processed in accordance with the law.
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intelligence-led policing and taking decisive action against violent crime across the country.
