Education Minister: Teacher Licensure Exam Cancellation Must Not Lower Standards

On July 19, 2025, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu visited the Accra Senior High School examination centre, where 37,000 candidates, including 5,000 retakers and 32,000 first-timers, are participating in the ongoing teacher licensure examination.

Iddrisu encouraged candidates to excel, assuring first-timers of a rewrite opportunity if they fail. He reiterated his directive to the National Teaching Council to allow the previous cohort of failed candidates to retake the exam before the August 30, 2025, deadline, aligning with plans to integrate licensure exams into final exams for future teacher training graduates.
Emphasizing the government’s manifesto pledge, Iddrisu stressed that the cancellation of the licensure exam must not compromise teacher quality, highlighting the importance of continuous professional development and assessments to enhance teachers’ capacity to impact students effectively.
