IGP Vows Relentless Crackdown on Criminal Gangs After Arrest of Four Suspects in Robbery-Murder Case

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu has reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s unwavering commitment to making life “uncomfortable” for criminals, following the arrest of four suspects linked to the robbery and fatal shooting of Mr. Andrews Amankwa at Ohyem Tego junction.

Briefing the media on Monday, February 23, 2026, the IGP announced significant breakthroughs in the case, which began with a violent armed robbery on February 10, 2026. The victim, driving a Toyota Hilux vehicle, was shot during the attack, and the vehicle was stolen. Despite being rushed to hospital, Mr. Amankwa succumbed to his injuries.

“I’m happy to announce that we have arrested four suspects, including three members of the gang that was responsible for the attack,” the IGP stated. A fourth suspect, believed to be the gang leader, was killed during a police operation after sustaining gunshot wounds while resisting arrest.

The IGP revealed that he immediately constituted a special task force comprising the Ashanti Regional Commander, the Regional Intelligence Team, the Anti-Robbery Unit, and the Cyber-Vetting Team from CID Headquarters to investigate the incident.

Key arrests include:

Akwasi Manu — arrested on February 18, 2026, after being found in possession of the deceased’s mobile phone. He was charged with possession of stolen property, remanded into police custody, and is scheduled to reappear in court on March 5, 2026.

Bashiru Tanko — arrested on February 19, 2026, at Atonsu High School Junction in Kumasi.

Kwadwo Amponsah — arrested on February 21, 2026, at Hireso near Buakra.

Emmanuel Kwame Appiah — arrested on February 22, 2026, at Danyame Soldier Barracks in Kumasi.

The IGP extended condolences to the family of the late Mr. Amankwa and commended police officers and members of the public who provided crucial information that led to the arrests.

“Your collective efforts will go a long way towards giving the family closure and ensuring justice is served,” he said.

In a stern warning to criminals, the IGP declared: “To the criminals out there, take note of this. We will leave no stone unturned. By every legal means possible, we will continue to come after you. We will pursue you, arrest you, and bring you to justice. That is a promise.”

The arrests represent a major success in the ongoing national fight against armed robbery, carjacking, and related violent crimes in the Ashanti Region and beyond. The Police Service has intensified intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and collaboration with the public to dismantle criminal networks.

Investigations remain active to determine if additional suspects are involved or if the gang is linked to other similar incidents. The recovered stolen vehicle and other exhibits are expected to aid further probes.
