Grieving Son Recounts Heartbreaking Discovery of Mother’s Death in Accra New Town Building Collapse

A grieving son has shared the painful details of losing his mother in the tragic building collapse at Accra New Town on Sunday, March 29, describing how the family was initially given false hope before learning the devastating truth.
The incident occurred when a structure being used as a makeshift place of worship near the Experimental D/A School suddenly collapsed, killing three people and injuring about 20 others.
In an emotional interview with Channel One News, the man recounted the confusion and heartbreak surrounding the rescue operation.
He said the family was informed that his mother had been rescued alive and was being rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment. However, upon reaching the hospital, they were directed to the morgue.
“Around 11 PM, the very last person brought from the building was my mother. She had been wrapped in a white cloth, and we were told she was unconscious and being rushed to the Police Hospital,” he said.
“Not knowing she was actually dead. They only said that to console us and give us hope. Upon arrival at the Police Hospital, we were referred to the morgue. She was disfigured. It looked as though the structure hit her right on the head. If not for the dress she was wearing, and a few marks on her hand, it would have been difficult to even identify her. Her face was disfigured, and her jaw had been displaced. Such a sad situation,” he narrated with visible emotion.
The tragedy has once again spotlighted concerns over the safety of old and uncompleted buildings being used for public gatherings in densely populated areas of Accra, as well as the challenges faced by emergency response teams during such incidents.
Investigations into the exact cause of the collapse and whether proper building regulations were followed are ongoing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.
