Police Arrest 19 Suspects, Seize Suspected Heroin, Cocaine and Cannabis in Kumasi Anti-Drug Operation
IGP Special Operations Team Raids Alaba and Thinker Areas – 111 Personnel Deployed in Crackdown on Drug Peddling Hotspots

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 19 suspects and seized quantities of suspected heroin, cocaine, cannabis (Indian hemp) and opioids during a special anti-drug operation in the Alaba and Thinker areas of Kumasi.
The operation was conducted by the IGP Special Operations Team, led by Bawah Abdul Jalil and Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo. A total of 111 personnel were deployed, supported by 10 service vehicles, including an armoured carrier and a Black Maria used for transporting suspects.
According to a police situation report dated March 25, 2026, the team carried out intelligence-led patrols across parts of the city before focusing on Alaba and Thinker Island, areas identified as major hotspots for drug peddling and substance abuse.
During the exercise, officers conducted searches on pedestrians and shop operators. A shop operator identified as Ola Ruth was arrested after dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were allegedly found on her premises. Eighteen additional suspects were later arrested in the same vicinity, bringing the total to 19.

Items recovered during the operation include substances suspected to be heroin, cocaine, Indian hemp, and opioids, along with materials believed to be used for drug consumption.
All 19 suspects have been transported to the Suntreso District Police Headquarters, where they are currently in custody assisting with investigations. The seized substances have been handed over to the appropriate units for forensic examination.
The police described the operation as part of ongoing efforts by the IGP Special Operations Team to dismantle drug networks and reduce crime in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region.
