GRIDCo, ECG Shut Down Mallam and Achimota Substations Following Flooding

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have temporarily shut down the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations following severe flooding caused by heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a joint statement, the two power utilities explained that the precautionary shutdown was necessary to safeguard lives, protect critical electricity infrastructure, and ensure the safety of operational personnel after floodwaters affected key installations.

According to the statement, the flooding created significant safety risks, making it impossible to continue operations at the affected substations.

“As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, it has become necessary to temporarily shut down power supply from the affected facilities,” the statement said.

GRIDCo and ECG noted that several critical components of the electricity network had been impacted by the floods, posing serious threats to both electrical equipment and personnel.

Engineers from both institutions are currently assessing the extent of the damage and closely monitoring conditions to determine when it will be safe to restore power supply.

The utilities also cautioned that the ongoing heavy rains and flooding could result in additional temporary power outages in other affected communities if similar safety concerns arise.

They advised the public to remain vigilant and promptly report electricity-related hazards such as fallen poles, exposed or fallen power lines, and flooded electrical installations through the nearest ECG office or the company’s customer service channels.

GRIDCo and ECG apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the outages and assured the public that electricity supply would be restored as soon as weather conditions improve and it is safe to resume operations.

The two institutions reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and maintaining the integrity of the national power infrastructure while emergency assessments continue.
