Government Provides GH¢15,000 Each to Families Affected by Accra Central Police Barracks Fire

The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has disbursed financial support of GH¢15,000 to each family affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police barracks.
Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka announced the relief package during a visit by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Friday, June 5, 2026, to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire.
The minister explained that the cash support is aimed at helping the affected families meet immediate needs, particularly clothing and other basic necessities, as they recover from the disaster.
He added that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) contributed an additional GH¢120,000 to support the relief efforts.
“…We were able to extend together with the police about GH¢15,000 to each family for them to be able to buy some clothes. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly also gave GH¢120,000 to the police to further support,” Mr. Muntaka said.
The minister noted that the distribution was guided by a careful assessment to ensure fairness and transparency in reaching all affected families.
The fire, which broke out on the night of Wednesday, June 3, destroyed several buildings at the police barracks, displacing many officers and their families. The incident also impacted parts of the nearby Accra Central Market area.
The timely intervention by the government and the AMA has been welcomed by the victims, who are currently being supported with temporary accommodation and other forms of assistance while long-term solutions are being arranged.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police.
