Government Declines MTN’s GHS20 Million Offer for Ghanaian Victims of South African Xenophobic Attacks
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined an offer by MTN Ghana to donate GHS20 million to support Ghanaian victims of recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In a press statement issued on August 26, 2026, the Ministry said it had become aware of media reports suggesting that MTN Ghana was preparing to make the donation.
The reports appeared to attribute the announcement of the intended GHS20 million donation to an interview granted by MTN Board Chairman Dr Ishmael Yamson.
The Government of Ghana commended MTN for the offer but respectfully declined it.
The Ministry reaffirmed that the Mahama Administration has made adequate provision for the ongoing evacuations and reintegration of Ghanaians and is therefore unable to accept the offer.
This position was earlier conveyed directly to the Board Chair and CEO of MTN when they called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on August 14, 2026.
The Government remains fully committed to the current humanitarian evacuations and reintegration financial support for every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way.
The Ministry assured that it will present to the general public a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuations as soon as the exercise is concluded, in the interest of transparency and accountability.
Government will continue to create the best business ecosystem for all international brands operating in Ghana to succeed, irrespective of the country from which their businesses originated.
The welfare of all Ghanaians remains the Government’s utmost priority.
