Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno is currently touring selected polling centres in Accra as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducts its presidential primary today, Saturday, January 31, 2026. The IGP began the tour in the Klottey Korle Constituency, visiting the YMCA polling centre to observe proceedings and assess security arrangements. The visit forms part of efforts by the Ghana Police Service to ensure a calm, orderly and credible voting process, following the NPP’s decision to designate the Police as the sole security agency for the primaries. More than 211,000 delegates are voting nationwide across over 300 polling centres to choose the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. The five aspirants contesting are: Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Kennedy Ohene Agyapong Dr Bryan Acheampong Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum Kwabena Agyei Agyepong On Thursday, January 28, the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee reiterated that only uniformed officers of the Ghana Police Service are permitted to provide security at polling centres, collation points and all related activities. The party cited intelligence suggesting possible unauthorised deployment of non-uniformed operatives and warned that any such action could undermine the integrity of the process. National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye said the party expects the Police to strictly enforce the directive to ensure a peaceful and transparent exercise. The Ghana Police Service has assured delegates and the public of its readiness to maintain law and order throughout the process. The NPP flagbearer election is widely regarded as a defining moment for the party as it seeks to reorganise, unify and position itself strongly ahead of the 2028 national contest. Results are expected later today.
