Tension at Korle Bu Police Station Polling Centre as Disqualified Delegates Confront Chairman, Attack Journalist

Tension flared at the Korle Bu Police Station polling centre on Saturday, January 31, 2026, during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries when two disqualified delegates confronted the constituency chairman and verbally attacked a Joy News journalist covering the event.

The two individuals (identities withheld) lost their delegate status after being removed from party positions, rendering them ineligible to vote in the internal polls.

The situation escalated into heated exchanges and insults, with the disqualified delegates accusing constituency chairman Collins Asante of bias. Asante is reportedly aligned with Kennedy Agyapong’s camp, while the two aggrieved delegates are known supporters of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Joy News journalist Fostina Sarfo, who was covering the event, reported being verbally attacked by one of the delegates, who also tried to obstruct her filming.

“During the confrontation, one of the delegates verbally attacked me while attempting to obstruct filming at the polling centre,” Sarfo said.

The situation nearly turned violent when another delegate attempted to pelt stones at the journalist, but police officers on duty intervened swiftly to restore order and prevent further escalation.

No arrests have been reported, and voting at the centre continued after the disruption was brought under control.

The incident highlights the high emotions surrounding today’s NPP flagbearer election, where over 211,000 delegates nationwide are choosing the party’s candidate for the 2028 general elections.
