UMaT Student Dies After Alleged Suicide Linked to Debt Pressure

A student of the University of Mines and Technology has died in what is believed to be a suicide, following mounting financial pressure over unpaid loans.

According to reports, the student had borrowed GH¢16,500, which he sent to a friend abroad to purchase mobile phones for resale. However, the friend allegedly spent the money, leaving the student unable to recover his investment.

Sources indicate that the situation worsened as demands to repay the loan intensified. In a desperate attempt to raise funds, the student reportedly took an additional loan and used it to place a bet, hoping to win enough to settle his debts. He is said to have lost the bet, further deepening his financial distress.

The pressure is believed to have become overwhelming, leading to his death. Reports also indicate that he left behind a note.

The tragic incident has sparked renewed concerns about financial stress among students, as well as the risks associated with borrowing and gambling.

If you or someone you know is struggling with distress or overwhelming pressure, it’s important to seek support from trusted individuals or professional counsellors
