22 Togolese Nationals Arrested in Savannah Region for Alleged Illegal Mining Plans

Police in the Savannah Region have arrested 22 Togolese nationals suspected of planning to engage in illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the West Gonja Municipality.
The suspects were apprehended on Friday, January 23, 2026, after officers from the Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department intercepted a Kia truck (registration number BA 223-12) during an intelligence-led operation.
The vehicle was being driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu. Preliminary questioning revealed that all occupants were foreign nationals from Togo and were travelling to Tuntumba, a community known for illegal mining activities.
According to the police, the suspects admitted they were heading to the area with the intention of engaging in galamsey.
All 22 suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further immigration and legal procedures.
The Police say investigations are ongoing and additional information will be released as the case develops.
This arrest is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb illegal mining activities, which continue to pose serious environmental and security threats across the country.
