NADMO Demolishes Unsafe Multi-Storey Building in Osu After Partial Collapse

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has demolished a multi-storey building in Osu that was declared structurally unsafe following a partial collapse.

Excavators were deployed to the site on Monday, June 8, 2026, to bring down the deteriorating structure, which posed a serious threat to residents, pedestrians, and nearby businesses.

The building, originally constructed as a seven-storey structure, had already been reduced to four storeys after three floors gave way in a previous incident. The remaining portion was demolished as a precautionary measure to prevent any further collapse and potential loss of life.

Officials described the exercise as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property amid growing concerns over the safety of ageing and weakened buildings across the Greater Accra Region, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Osu demolition comes just a day after a three-storey building collapsed at Avenor in North Kaneshie on Sunday, June 7, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to several others.

Speaking during a visit to the Avenor disaster scene, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, revealed that 16 buildings across the Greater Accra Region have been identified as structurally unsafe and will be demolished in the coming days.

“Currently, NADMO has identified about 16 buildings within the Greater Accra Region that have to come down,” the minister said, adding that evacuations are underway to ensure the safety of occupants before the structures are pulled down.

The recent incidents have heightened public concern about building safety standards and the need for stricter enforcement of regulations to prevent preventable tragedies in the capital.
