Ga Traditional Council Declares One-Month Noisemaking Ban Across Ga State Ahead of Homowo Festival 2026

The Ga Traditional Council has officially announced a one-month ban on noisemaking across the entire Ga State, effective from Sunday, May 4 to Wednesday, June 4, 2026.
The announcement was made by the President of the Ga-Dangme Council, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, who explained that the ban is intended to create a period of peace, solemnity, and spiritual reflection in preparation for the annual Homowo Festival.
Details of the Ban
During this period, the following activities will be strictly prohibited:
- Use of microphones and loudspeakers
- Loud clapping and tambourines
- Musical instruments during worship and public events
- Outdoor loudspeakers and roadside evangelism using megaphones
Religious institutions have been directed to confine their activities strictly within church or mosque premises. The Council emphasised that these measures are necessary to preserve the spiritual integrity and cultural significance of the Homowo preparations.
The ban will apply to all areas within the Ga State, including Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram, and Kpone. Specific noisemaking dates and times for each traditional area will be communicated after May 4, 2026.
The Regional Security Council and the Ghana Police Service will collaborate with a dedicated task force to monitor compliance. Offenders who violate the ban will face legal prosecution.
The Ga Traditional Council has urged all residents, worshippers, and visitors within the Ga State to respect the directive, describing it as an important cultural practice protected under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
Homowo is one of the most significant festivals of the Ga people, celebrated with great joy after a period of solemn preparation. The noisemaking ban is a longstanding tradition that precedes the festive “hooting at hunger” celebrations.
