Electoral Commission Reopens Nominations for District-Level By-Elections 2025 in Uncontested Areas

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the reopening of nominations for Electoral Areas and Units where no candidates filed during the initial phase of the District Level Elections 2025, in line with the District Level Elections Regulations, 2015 (C.I. 89).

The decision aims to ensure comprehensive participation in the local governance polls scheduled for December 5, 2025.

In a brief statement issued Wednesday, EC Deputy Chairman for Operations Samuel Tettey confirmed the move, noting that a new timetable for the reopened nominations will be released shortly. “The Commission will reopen nominations for Electoral Areas and Units where no Nomination was filed,” the statement read, addressing gaps in coverage from the original filing period in September.

The District Level Elections, the first since 2018, will elect assembly members and unit committee members across Ghana’s 260 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs). Over 66,000 positions are at stake, with the EC reporting that more than 20,000 candidates had filed by the initial deadline, but several areas remained uncontested, particularly in rural districts like those in the Volta and Upper East regions.

Tettey emphasized the EC’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that the reopening aligns with regulatory provisions to prevent vacancies and promote broad representation. Potential candidates must meet eligibility criteria, including Ghanaian citizenship, age 18+, and no criminal convictions, with nominations typically requiring endorsement from 5-10 registered voters in the area.

The announcement comes amid preparations for the elections, which will influence local development priorities and precede the 2026 general elections
