Carlos Queiroz Steps Down as Black Stars Head Coach

Carlos Queiroz has announced his resignation as head coach of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, following the team’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His decision comes just days after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

In a farewell message to Ghanaians, Queiroz reflected on his tenure with gratitude and optimism for the future.
“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn.
I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more.”
He stressed that the future success of the Black Stars must be built on strong structures beyond the pitch.
“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”
Queiroz expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Ghana Football Association, his players, technical staff and Ghanaian supporters for their trust and support throughout his time in charge.
“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars.”
Addressing the fans, he acknowledged that although the team did not achieve all its sporting objectives, it had restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on the world stage.
“We cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”
Queiroz concluded his message with a note of hope:
“Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.”
His resignation brings an end to a brief tenure that began in April 2026, when he was appointed to lead Ghana into the World Cup.
