Residents of Berekum have taken to the streets to demonstrate against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the municipality.
The demonstrators are particularly concerned about illegal mining activities in communities including Benkasa and Amomaso, which they say are having a devastating impact on the environment.
According to the residents, galamsey activities are destroying farmlands and polluting water bodies in the area. They are therefore calling on the appropriate authorities to take urgent action to stop illegal mining and protect the natural resources of the municipality.
Speaking during the demonstration, community leader Oluman Mathew from Berekum Benkasa expressed concern about the situation and called for decisive measures to address the problem.
