Ga South Assembly to Demolish Structures on Waterways to Combat Flooding

The Ga South Municipal Assembly has announced plans to demolish structures located on waterways as part of measures to address persistent flooding within the municipality.
Speaking during a tour of communities affected by recent floods, the Municipal Chief Executive, Moses Kabu Kubi Ocansey, said the Assembly is committed to tackling the root causes of flooding and protecting lives and property from future disasters.
According to him, the exercise will target buildings and other structures that obstruct the natural flow of water and contribute to flooding during heavy rainfall.
Mr. Ocansey explained that, in addition to the demolitions, the Assembly will undertake improvements to drainage systems across the municipality to ensure the free flow of stormwater and reduce the risk of flooding.
He further cautioned residents against practices that worsen flooding, including indiscriminate dumping of refuse and unauthorized construction on waterways.
The MCE stressed that public cooperation would be essential in achieving a lasting solution to the municipality’s flooding challenges.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro Constituency, Felix Akwetey Okley, assured residents affected by the recent floods of support and relief assistance.
He pledged to work closely with the Assembly and relevant agencies to provide aid to victims and support efforts to help affected communities recover from the impact of the floods.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over recurring flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region, particularly during the rainy season, with authorities intensifying efforts to improve drainage infrastructure and enforce planning regulations.
