GSA Shuts Down Mattress Companies in Afienya Over Use of Substandard Materials

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down several mattress manufacturing companies at Afienya near Tema for allegedly using substandard and unapproved materials in the production of mattresses.
The affected companies include Yin Yuan Jia Limited, Mooda Limited, Hue Sheng Company, producers of Kalusini mattresses, and Asano Service.
According to the GSA, the firms were using polystyrene instead of approved polyurethane materials in their mattress production processes. Polystyrene is commonly used for packaging electronic appliances and household products.
Speaking during the operation on Monday, May 18, Greater Accra Regional Manager Clement Kubati disclosed that the chemicals used by the companies failed GSA quality tests and posed potential risks to public health and the environment.
“These chemicals are unapproved and can affect both human health and the environment,” he stated.
The Authority explained that the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to enforce manufacturing standards, protect consumers, and ensure that products on the market meet approved safety and quality requirements.
