Authorities Begin Demolition of Illegal Structures at Sakumo Ramsar Site

A joint demolition exercise led by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly has commenced today, Tuesday, May 5, targeting unauthorised structures within the Golf Course section of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.
The three-day operation forms part of renewed efforts to restore natural waterways and reduce the growing risk of flooding as the rainy season intensifies.
Officials say illegal constructions on key drainage paths have severely obstructed water flow, contributing to recurrent flooding in nearby communities.
Authorities emphasised that the exercise is not abrupt but a continuation of long-standing enforcement actions aimed at protecting the ecologically sensitive wetland. Despite earlier warnings, notices, and previous demolitions, encroachment has persisted.
The Sakumo Ramsar Site is internationally recognised for its ecological importance but has faced increasing pressure from unregulated human activities, particularly illegal construction.
Officials warn that disregard for planning regulations not only threatens the environment but also exposes lives and property to danger through flooding.
Security personnel have been deployed to maintain order during the exercise, while affected property owners are being urged to cooperate fully to avoid confrontations.
